MUSCAT: As the project of opening the University College of Media Arts and Sciences (UCMAS), fully owned by Majan Consolidated Company, is underway, the CEO of UCMAS told Times of Oman that their primary market is definitely Oman, which includes Omanis as well as expatriates. “Our second target would be the GCC countries and Middle East, and the third market would include countries like Morocco, Spain, Italy, Turkey, all the way to Asia and Africa,” Professor Gary Allen English said. This is the first project of its kind in the region, stressed Prof. Gary. “There are some studies related to media like mass communication. However, it is for the first time in the region a university devoted to media arts and sciences will be established with high level of specialisations,” he said.

Devoting oneself to one special area is vital, he pointed out. “Media is not only limited to one area, but there are other several specialisations in media itself, including screenwriting, art direction, sound design, and much more. When someone devotes him/herself to one special area it is like recollecting pieces of a puzzle and putting them together,” he said.

“We do not want a student to feel lost by collecting bits from each area. In fact, we want the students to give full concentration in one area,” Prof. Gary added.

When did the idea of establishing the university come up? “This was born in my heart four years ago. In fact, we could have done this in the UAE, Qatar or Bahrain. When we talked with His Highness Sayyid Barghash bin Said Al Said and Sayyid Nawaf bin Barghash bin Said Al Said, our hearts just came together, and I said “This is the place!”.

During casual conversations with the youth of this country, I found some of them were interested in joining the university, Prof. Gary said. “The other day I met a young man at Qurum City Centre. He asked me what am I doing in the country? I answered ‘We are making a new university’. He said ‘Another university!’ I said ‘Yes.’ He then asked what is the university about. I said ‘Media’. He simultaneously asked, ‘Will we be able to make films? If yes, then I have four friends who would love to join.” In a quick talk with Times of Oman, Gary L. Pudney, the popular TV producer from Hollywood, said: “There is no business like show business.” He added: “I want to be convinced with the support we are getting. We won’t achieve anything if we are not backed up.

Their Highnesses in the Sultanate have showed their enthusiasm to complete the project. If they didn’t want to do it, I wouldn’t have wanted to do it either.” Asked if any obstacles have appeared on the way, Gary said, “I believe that money is name of the game. However, I am delightful with the reception we got from Sayyid Barghash and Sayyid Nawaf. They have shown their full support to complete the project.”

Would Omanis be interested to join the university? “There are very smart young people that I have met here in Oman. I believe that this is a great opportunity for the young generation. In fact, if the cultural awards programme will be introduced, the young generation here would have the opportunity to learn how this kind of shows are put together to be screened,” Pudney added.

MUSCAT:
Have you ever dreamt of a day when the Sultanate organises an event similar to the Grammy or Emmy Awards, where popular names like Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie walk the red carpet? If yes, then the dream might come true one day. The plan of organising an international cultural event in the Sultanate is currently being discussed.

“Oman is a wonderful place but it is a long way from US. The programme will be like a Noble Prize of culture, and will include performances and popular hosts known worldwide,” said Gary L. Pudney, the popular TV producer from Hollywood, USA, in a press conference held yesterday at Majan Consolidated Company in Madinat Al A’alam.

“The festival will bring in a new concept of honours.

“The honourees would be honoured for what they have contributed throughout their career,” Gary pointed out.

It is Gary’s second visit to Oman as he is inspired by the natural beauty of the country.

“I have to talk to my friend Oprah Winfrey once I am back in the US. I am sure she will be interested to visit such a beautiful country. With the mountains and deserts, the place looks like another ‘California’. You can treat me as a fan of Oman as I am highly impressed with this country,” he said.

Gary discussed in the press meet of his intention and that of Majan Consolidated Company to open a University College of Media Arts and Sciences (UCMAS) by October 2011 in Seeb area.

“I am thankful to Their Highnesses for recognising the project. The university will cover a range of disciplines related to media including cinema and digital TV,” he said.

Promoting Oman globally

Anwar Al Balushi, Group CEO, believes that such programmes will boost and introduce Oman to the other part of the world. “The programme will definitely contribute in promoting the Sultanate globally,” Anwar said.

“It is a great pleasure to announce the soft launch of our new venture — University College for Media Arts and Sciences,” noted His Highness Sayyid Nawaf bin Barghash bin Said Al Said, vice-chairman of Majan Consolidated.

Majan Consolidated, with the significant efforts of its chairman Sayyid Nawaf, strives to position Oman as the centre of excellence for media studies in the GCC region as it will be working closely with Ministry of Higher Education and eminent global media personalities for translating this endeavour to a big success.

“We plan to establish a University College for Media Studies in Oman as part of our humble efforts in support of His Majesty’s vision to regain the glorious position of Oman among the rest of the world,” Sayyid Nawaf pointed out.

“Plans are well underway to introduce unique international media events that will draw more global focus and attention to our country which in turn will contribute heavily to the nation’s economy, pursuing the hallmark mission of our other group companies,” he added.

“Media business is in a constant change. The students at the university will not only graduate with the skills of ‘now’ but also with the skills of ‘later’,” said Prof. Gary Allen English, CEO of UCMAS.

“Through the university, we do not want to focus on Hollywood, in fact we aim at focusing on what we would call ‘MuscatiHood’. It is important to develop this kind of opportunities for young people in this part of the world,” he added.

Majan Consolidated officials along with Gary L. Pudney paid a visit to Salem bin Nasser Al Maskri, secretary–general of the Council for Higher Education. The meeting looked into the possibilities of opening a Media University College in the Sultanate, as well as highlighted the role of the Council for Higher Education in the development of the educational sector in the Sultanate.
